For your information, SBMS renews its insurance coverage at the end of February each year. Since the Shed was established, we have taken insurance through the Australian Men's Shed Association. This year, following a suggestion from the Queensland Men's Shed Association, we decided to look at what alternative insurance packages were available. As a result, the Executive Committee has decided to accept an insurance package arranged specifically for Australian Men's Sheds by an insurance broker, A J Gallagher.

A comparison of the new package against the previous AMSA package has shown that the Gallagher offer would provide more comprehensive coverage approximately 30% cheaper than the AMSA package.

Details of the new insurance package are available for your perusal from the Member Documents page of the Member Portal.

The Sausage Sizzle was manned by David Spillane, Neil Robertson, Brian Massey, Graham Brind, Warren Hipworth, Ray Lockett, John Clements, Steve Chakalakis (immediately after dental work), Steve Pearce and me.

On a very hot day we finished up with a reasonable profit with drink sales well exceeding sausages in number, if not in income!

Next time (Saturday  24th) hope for cooler weather, both for comfort and profits!

Sorry everyone - Date is in MARCH so ....

90 minutes session at 10:00 AM 20th March 2018 at BIG Shed, by Bronwyn O'Keeffe from Queensland Ambulance Service.

Come and, at least, it will reduce the chances of you running around making a noise like a mad chicken when one of your mates electrocutes himself.

Autism Hub and South Brisbane Men’s Shed

    2018 FACT Program

In 2018, the South Brisbane Men’s Shed, Fathers of Autistic Children Together (FACT) special interest group in collaboration with the Department of Education Autism Hub will deliver a series of events and activities for fathers and other male family members of children with autism.

The program aims to provide a safe, supportive environment for fathers to connect and learn. It also seeks to build the confidence of fathers of children with autism to be active partners in their child’s schooling and life journeys.

Highlights of the 2018 FACT Program include:

    • ·         BBQ&A sessions – an extension of blokes standing around the backyard BBQ. This series of workshops hosted by the Autism Hub will cover a range of topics relevant for fathers of children with autism. These evening sessions (which include a BBQ dinner of course) will feed the body, mind and soul and build parenting confidence.
    • ·         FACT events – opportunity for Dads, kids (including siblings), other male family and  shed members to connect socially at a Brisbane sporting event … group bookings to see the Reds, Broncos and Lions.
    • ·         South Brisbane Men’s Shed activities – the opportunity to tap into key shed events throughout the year e.g. early morning golf, dragon boating and BYO workshop project.

It will be obvious to anyone who has looked at the Shed's website in the past that it has changed. Originally it was based on Word Press, ably developed by Dave Hamblyn. However we found that the information management load falling on the Secretary needed a more integrated approach and a change has been made to Wild Apricot. This change means a new set of tools for the administrators to get used to and a new web site for the Shed members to look at and, we hope, engage with. We will have demonstrations of the new web site, for anyone who is interested, on the BiG TV in the BIG shed, during the computer sessions and a more formal introduction once we get it looking more rational.
